This is the "Battle of the Bathtubs" boys and girls.  The Seltoran has his work cut out for him.  The Gorns are a classic "crunch power" race and the Seltoran (to say the least) isn't.  I mean really?  How do you saber-dance with a Turn Mode of D?  Watch for lots of "run and gun" with this one. 

To be honest, I never liked the Particle Cannon.  It always seemed to have too many shortcomings.  It's excessively expensive to hold, has less-than-dazzling ability to hit, and doesn't hit that hard when it does. Its sole advantage is its ability to fire twice in a round (but never within 12 impulses of another firing, even over a turn break).  Give me any two of those shortcomings, but all three seem too much. 

Because I don't like the PC, I wouldn't bet on the Seltoran in a fight like this, but then I didn't think the Seltoran could beat an Andro and Rick scrapped one just last round.  Handily. 

Turn 1
The two have closed to 15 hexes and the Gorn has put plasma into the ether.  But the Seltoran doesn't seem to care.  He's turned towards the Gorn and the 50 points of plasma it has launched.  Maybe it still thinks it's one of those 10 P-1 Selts... 

On IMP 24 the Seltoran got first shield-singe by zapping the Gorn with PC's when the Gorn turned off.  9 points to Shield 5 (missed shield 6 by the razor-thinnest of margins)  Let's hope his phasers shoot as well when the Gorn's plasma load hits. 

This is probably too late in the turn to first-fire your PC's.  To make this weapon work, you have to be constantly on your opponent with no letup.  You NEED that second set of shots.  Admittedly, this means you have to balance the need for the second shot against the desirability of getting in an overload shot, which can only be done with the first shot.  The bottom line is you need to sandblast shields at the highest rate game circumstances allow.
 

Turn 2
Speeds are Selt:30, Gorn:31. Everyone put their running shoes on. After the initial bursts of speed, the Gorn dropped to 22 and the Selt just dropped to 24.  Gasping and wheezing, the S-torp ought to impact next impulse--after 25 hexes of flight.  Well, pseudo-gasping and wheezing, if you get my drift. 

The Selt has 8 P-1s.  To keep the pressure on the Gorn, it could have used some of them (preferably last turn) to take the edge off the S-torp and shorten the run-out needed.

IMP 24:  The final speed changes are in and it looks dire for the Seltoran.  He's been chased up against the barrier with the Gorn mere hexes behind.  The Selt's speed is dropping to 17, whereas the Gorn's back at 31.  This, in my opinion illustrates the excessive power drain of the particle cannon. The Selt doesn't have the power to escape his pursuer because he was charged 6 points to hold the power remaining in his PC capacitors.  This is before any energy he put into them to rearm them. 

While what I think won't change a published race like the Seltorans much, I think a 1 pt hold cost or NO hold cost for the Particle Cannon would be preferable and more balanced.

IMP 25: Looks like the Seltoran felt as bad as I did.  He just hit the wall and brought himself to a jarring halt with the Gorn only 5 hexes away and moving at 31.  This has all the marks of Something Desperate.  Nice show with the two bearing P-1's.  Range 5 and he still got an 8-point notch on the Gorn's shield.  But the Gorn has his plans too.  He's launched a shuttle and cleverly turned away as the Seltoran weasels.  The turn has ended with the shuttle and the weasel as yet unable to consummate their love. 

Originally the Gorn also launched another S+F torp combo along with the shuttle.  That's when Rick decided to Weasel.  I guess he intended to anyway...

I am not convinced that the Seltoran should have slammed the wall.  That gave the Gorn the ability to launch and leave to reload without harassment while the Selt strives to get up a head of steam again.  Even without the concession, I would definitely rated the fight so far as "advantage Gorn"

Turn 3
GET YOUR EA FORM IN RICK!  Or the hull boxes roll! 

5/5: The axe fell on the first Aft Hull before Rick's spies sabotaged my computer.  Game off hold as of late-Friday, but still no word from Rick.  The game will be a forfeit if Rick doesn't contact me by the end of the month... 
5/13: Firemane's website tells me that Rick suffered a major hard drive crash.  Well, I SUPPOSE this is a good reason for being incommunicado so the hull box penalties go away.  He sure taking a while getting it fixed though.  3 weeks and counting.  Unlike HR4 games, this one ENDS at the end of this month.  Take pen in hand/claw/etc. guys.  This has likely become an essay test. 

5/27  Could someone let me know if Rick's alive or dead?  Deadline's coming fast... 

6/1 Well that's it.  HR3 game #301 is OVER.  This is now OFFICIALLY an essay test.  Final strategies due to ME by 10:00 PM, PST 6/3/98 

I'm not holding my breath for Rick, though.  I'd say it's a 99% probability of a forfeit Gorn victory. 

6/2: Rick conceded.  While he might have been able to pull it out, he WAS in an awkward position to be sure...
